No Country For Old Men

After recently buying the DVD, I decided to watch No Country For Old Men - a crackin' film!

What I noticed was how the choice of weapons and objects for the main baddie - Anton Chigurh - were perfectly matched for his character. Just the sound of the compressed air canister gives me the creeps now! And the look of the silenced shotgun looks so sinister!

Anyway, go see it...

Ring of Death

A couple of weeks ago, me and my flatmates were happily playing the Xbox, until suddenly the whole room fell silent - the "ring of death" appeared on the front of the console. This pretty much means the product has died and no more fun for us!

What I'm trying to say is that I've never been so emotionally affected by a product feature (normally happy and green then turning blood red!) - I was so struck with dread and panic - the console wasn't even mine!

Good work Microsoft for making the whole flat shit themselves! (and repairing it, free of charge).

Visualisations

The thing I've noticed recently is that hand renders of products have disappeared, being replaced by computer aided visualisations. I do agree that machines are getting better at creating more "realistic" pictures, but they feel so lifeless, so sterile.

I thought the whole point of renders were to sell the product to the client - make them feel part of it, get them emotionally involved - but I don't think the computer renders have this. Fair enough they're very accurate, but where's the life?

McRobot

I think it is very ironic how I am exploring the world of craft and uniqueness when I am currently employed by possibly the most anti-individual company on earth - McDonalds!

Although they are very good at being efficient (and sometimes energy saving), I don't think humans are meant to be efficient. How boring would life be if all you did was go from A to B without a bit of banter, a laugh, even sadness? We're not robots! It's made me even more determined not to make mass produced objects.

And following on from a comment, if a craft is doing something over and over again, then I must be a master craftsman at making Big Macs! I think there's more to being a craftsman than meets the eye.
